Heritage

The palace behind the photograph.

A waterfront setting, ceremonial rooms and changing roles offer several ways into Dolmabahçe’s story.

A palace beside the water

Dolmabahçe replaced the earlier Beşiktaş waterfront palace during Sultan Abdülmecid’s reign.

Begin outside with the long façade, gates and relationship to the Bosphorus. A wider view helps put individual rooms and decorative details into context.

A continuing national story

The palace later served Atatürk and opened as a museum-palace in 1984.

Its official institutional history explains those changes. During a visit, let labels and the setting add detail to the broader story rather than treating each room as an isolated photograph.
